FULL JOB DESCRIPTION
Planet Science is an educational site with a mission on the web to inspire and motivate school students in their study of science. It also supports teachers and parents to make science an exciting topic of enquiry both in class and at home.
During its first half decade since launch in 2005, Planet Science has acquired a strong following of teachers and school scientists, and built a good reputation with its student users for its comprehensive and rich content.
A new chapter in the life of Planet Science is now opening, with the transfer of the site to the media company Tinopolis by its original founders, NESTA, and funding for a re-launch, re-build and plenty of new content. Tinopolis is now looking for an inspired and experienced Content Editor to deliver a refreshed and re-energised stream of science features for a broad educational audience. Working alongside our crack team of interactive designers and programmers, and with other partners in science and learning, you will take daily responsibility for delivering exciting and provocative content that engages young people with science.
Planet Science is a part time role (24 hours/week) which requires presence for at least one day each week in both Llanelli (our production base) and Bristol (our Science and Education partners).
Do you have what we are looking for ?
You will have several years of experience in digital production of trusted content and be used to publishing to the web without any further senior editorial review. Your track record will demonstrate high standards in writing clearly and accurately in ways that engage young audiences. You will be confident in the procedures of online creation and production in commercial settings. You will be ready for the challenge of transforming a valued brand for a new generation of users. You do not need to be a trained scientist, but this subject needs to genuinely inspire and excite you.
In terms of personal qualities, you will be a self-starter, used to working with remotely-located colleagues, and able to work in a flexible and organised way across a part-time and split-site role. You will be able to rapidly adapt content to different audiences and to respond to changing editorial needs. Your professional discipline will drive forward the creative and inspiring editorial mission of the site while recognising the demands of design, technology, time, budget and stakeholders. You will be open to partnerships with relevant stakeholders. You will be able to allocate (with prior arrangement) the days of your working week to our production HQ in Llanelli, South Wales, and to working in the offices of Science & Education partner organisations in the Bristol area.
What does the role involve ?
Your employment will have two main work-strands: principally it is content creation, but there is also some site management.
In the work-strand of editorial content, the main responsibility is the planning and delivering of at least two 500 appx word pieces of illustrated and interactive inspirational new science content onto the site per week, in conjunction with Tinopolis specialist teams in graphics, interactive design, IT, and with reference to the science curriculum. Some of this output will be in partnership with external organisations and specialist or celebrity writers whom you will commission. Additionally, you will package selected content as a regular newsletter distributed widely by email to science teachers. You will also provide some co-ordination and creative advice on content and approach for two major themed campaigns a year to be undertaken in partnership with external organisations, whose content will be created largely by external writers. In this editorial capacity, you will report to the Creative Director of Planet Science.
In the work-strand of management of the site, you will need to be able to perform simple manipulations of the site layout, navigation and functionality using our CMS (Umbraco: training & support is offered). You will also be expected to fulfil some light moderation/community manager housekeeping functions in the chat rooms once a week. You will need to liaise from time to time with marketing and promotion teams. You will need to have an eye to the site???s metrics and what these reveal about the audience???s reaction to the content. In this production capacity you will report to the Head of Production.
