Chief Executive Officer

The Council of UAR seeks to appoint a Chief Executive Officer to replace Dr Simon Festing who is leaving in the spring of 2011.

The new Chief Executive will lead the activities required to pursue the newly developed strategy for 2011-2015, maintain the confidence of subscribing members, and develop stakeholder relationships. The CEO must be capable of providing outstanding leadership, manage the highly qualified and deeply committed staff of seven, and represent Understanding Animal Research in many different arenas.

This is a full-time, 12-month (45-week) contract, with a fee rate of ??500 per day. Candidates may also make a strong case for filling this vacancy by working four long days a week, based on a higher daily rate.

Closing date:  13 March
Initial Interviews:  21 & 22 March
Final Interviews:  w/c 4 April – probably 7 April

A director/CEO is required to lead and develop stakeholder relationships, secure additional funding , maintain financial stability and evaluate the options to merge with another organisation or not.


UAR aims to achieve broad understanding and acceptance of the humane use of animals in biomedical research in the UK, to advance science and medicine. UAR achieves this by engaging with selected audiences and providing appropriate, evidence-based information. It currently focuses on three areas of work: policy, communication and schools education.

The Role
Aside from the day-to-day management of the team, the CEO will be a key driving force behind achieving the strategy, in particular deepening historical and establishing new stakeholder relationships, securing additional funding , maintaining financial stability and evaluating the case whether to merge with another organisation or not . This role will report directly to the Chair and Council

Preferred applicants will be able to demonstrate a successful career in general management and leading teams within a pharmaceutical, biomedical or a similar research based business. The applicant would be a science or medical graduate who possesses a good understanding of the life sciences sector in the UK and recognises the essential role of responsible and humane animal research.

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate a proven track record of changing attitudes through effective, evidence based public relations. This role will suit an individual who relishes the responsibility of leading and motivating a team and effectively influencing stakeholders in a high profile and fast changing environment.
