Understanding Animal Research
Policy & Communications Officer

 

Wanted

Two enthusiastic, lively, analytical and organised science communicators to join in our small team based in Central London. Understanding Animal Research aims to achieve broad understanding and acceptance of the humane use of animals in biomedical research in the UK, to advance science and medicine. The two roles are in policy/communications and in our schools education programme.

 

Requirements

???             Science graduate

???             Postgraduate qualification or experience in science communications

???             Appreciation of the role of animal research in biomedical science

???             Ability to communicate at all levels level in a friendly, confident and competent manner.

???             Policy & Communications Officer: Internet research skills, and the ability to analyse and collate detailed information, produce briefings.

  

Policy & Communications Officer

???             Research policy issues, develop policy analysis and write policy briefings relating to animal research. Current policy issues include better regulation, the implementation of European law in the UK, freedom of information, 3Rs, experimental design and systematic reviews, animal research statistics.

???             Assist the Chief Executive with co-ordinating public affairs work.

???             Project manage development of the www.AnimalResearch.Info site and translation of its pages, co-ordinate with external agencies and funders.

???             Assist with print publications, www.UnderstandingAnimalResearch.org.uk and press office work as necessary.

???             Help to organise and minute meetings, conduct research, collect information, maintain databases, communicate internally and externally, including servicing the Policy Advisory Group. Contribute to the effective running of our small office and assist with other tasks as necessary.

 

Remuneration:

??23K-??26K, 12m contract with the possibility to extend. 25 days annual leave.

Policy & Communications Officer
The suitable candidate will be an enthusiastic communicator with an interest in science, science policy and policy analysis and an understanding of the issues and challenges facing animal research today.
The Policy and Communications Officer will make a significant contribution to delivery of policy and public affairs work and the strategic public communication of how and why animal research is conducted.
Main duties
Policy and Public Affairs (reporting to Chief Executive)
  • To research policy issues, develop policy analysis and write policy briefings relating to animal research.
  • To take forward the work of the organisation on policy issues, including: better regulation, the implementation of European law in the UK, freedom of information, 3Rs, experimental design and systematic reviews, animal research statistics.
  • To monitor antivivisection and animal welfare groups and news items from their press centres and alert other staff where necessary.
  • To assist the Chief Executive with co-ordinating the public affairs work of UAR
Communications (reporting to Communications Director)
  • To manage the development of the AnimalResearch.Info site and ensure that it contains relevant content and pages, regularly published or updated where necessary.
  • To project manage the translation of AnimalResearch.Info into four European languages, co-ordinating with external agencies and funders
  • To assist with print publications or content on the UAR website as directed by the Communications Director.
  • To assist with press office work as necessary.
Miscellaneous
  • To help to organise meetings, take minutes, conduct research, collect information, maintain databases etc.
  • To help to communicate internally and externally, including servicing the Policy Advisory Group.
  • To contribute to the effective running of the office and assisting with other tasks as necessary.
Remuneration: ??23K – ??26K. Benefits include 25 days annual leave
