Our highly successful PR and campaigns team needs an experienced and enthusiastic communicator to manage and develop this key area of work. You will lead the team in raising awareness of epilepsy, promoting our work and achieving positive change for people living with epilepsy. As part of our Communications Department, you will be working with very motivated and skilled colleagues. With excellent levels of support within the organisation, the department is looking forward to an exciting period of development.

You will be a skilled PR professional, with demonstrable experience in strategic planning and running effective PR and issues-based campaigns. You will have excellent interpersonal skills, an ability to advise and persuade colleagues at all levels and, ideally, experience as a media spokesperson.

You will need a thorough understanding of the role of PR and internal communications in managing public profile and image. Ideally, you will also have an understanding of the processes involved in lobbying and influencing the work of decision makers in the political and healthcare arenas.

Purpose of job

The PR & Campaigns Manager works to increase positive awareness of epilepsy, to promote the work of Epilepsy Action through proactive PR work, and to achieve positive change for people living with epilepsy through effective and timely PR and campaigns.

Scope of activities

Epilepsy Action is the leading UK charity working to create positive change for people living with epilepsy.  We have a very professional image and maintaining and developing that image is a key part of this post???s role.  Epilepsy Action consistently achieves high levels of media coverage and this is vital in building our profile.  Through effective proactive and reactive PR, and a programme of well targeted campaigns, the PR and campaigns team raises awareness of epilepsy, Epilepsy Action???s work and generates positive change in the attitudes towards epilepsy and the nature of epilepsy related services. 

The Communications Department is a key department within the Association.  As well as PR and campaigns, it is responsible for brand management, producing our range of magazines and journals, the design and print of the charity???s materials, creating and maintaining our award winning website and developing our digital media work.

Principal duties and responsibilities

These include the following:

??         Managing the running of and participating in the delivery of the PR and Campaigns by:

o    Overseeing the day to day running of the PR and campaigns team

o    Providing consultation and supervision for PR and campaigns staff both on a daily ad hoc basis and through regular, individual supervision sessions

o    Ensure the regular supervision and support of all staff in the team including regular (monthly) 1:1s, regular (monthly) team meetings and annual appraisals

o    Including staff in the planning and objective setting process
Supporting and motivating staff to achieve targets

o    Ensuring that there is a good flow of information and communication within the department and organisation by the timely reporting of relevant information to department staff and also other staff within the organisation

o    Working in line with the Investors in People standard in all areas of staff management and development

o    Ensuring all aspects of the department???s work complies with health and safety, equal opportunities and other legislation and established Epilepsy Action procedures, with regard to both the management of staff and when dealing with members, clients and supporters

??         To publicise and promote the work of the Association to stimulate financial and other support and to encourage the use of our services by:

o    Working with the Press Officer to provide promotional and PR support for Epilepsy Action???s branches and regional services team

o    Working with the Press Officer to provide promotional and PR support for Epilepsy Action???s fundraising work

o    Working with the Press Officer to provide promotional and PR support for the work of other departments within the organisation

o    Researching new opportunities for promoting the charity???s message(s)

o    Preparing detailed PR strategies, plans and schedules for events, campaigns etc

o    Representing Epilepsy Action at external events when required

o    Developing and maintaining relationships with suitable case studies in conjunction with the Press Officer

??         To promote a positive image of Epilepsy Action and to maintain and build our public profile by:

o    Advising colleagues at all levels on the best approach in protecting and promoting the charity???s public image and profile

o    Maintaining and developing the support of celebrities and public figures

o    Working with the Communications Manager to establish key messages, maintain key statistics and to communicate these to all colleagues

o    Working with external agencies and clearly establishing Epilepsy Action???s standards, key messages and objectives

??         To develop and deliver effective campaigns for positive change by working with the campaigns officers to:

o    Monitor public affairs and policy to inform campaign work

o    Develop suitable issue-based topics for proactive campaigns

o    Work with all departments to devise and implement effective PR and campaigns

o    Establish good working relationships with relevant external organisations and key personnel

o    Work with relevant staff to establish effective and relevant research in support of PR and campaigns

o    Lead promotional and PR support for Epilepsy Action???s campaigns

o    Work with colleagues to ensure the effective communication and dissemination of campaign messages through the organisation???s communications

o    Monitor, evaluate and report on campaign progress and results

??         To monitor and develop Epilepsy Action policy by working with the campaigns officers to:

o    Monitor and maintain a broad knowledge of external policy that may impact on Epilepsy Action, its members and service users

o    Work with colleagues to establish, monitor and develop new and existing internal policy for approval

o    Develop effective means of policy communication, internally and externally
