Senior Reporter on IOM3 magazines



The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining has an in-house magazine team producing five regular member magazines: Materials World, The Packaging Professional, Clay Technology, Wood Focus, and MADE.


Working under the supervision of and reporting to the Editor and News Editor, the Senior Reporter will fulfil a key role in the editorial team by managing some news sections (for MADE and Clay Technology magazines), producing news and news features, and assisting in the career development of the Junior Reporters. Representing the magazines at events and helping to raise their profile will also be an important part of their activities.  


Skills and attributes

  • Previously demonstrated ability to write and edit incisive, well-structured news and news features within a magazine environment
  • Good news sense, with experience in commissioning news desirable
  • Comfortable working with technical content, with some prior experience
  • Confident face-to-face and telephone interview manner
  • Attention to detail, strong proofreading and sub-editing skills
  • Good IT skills. Experience of QuarkXPress/Indesign and Macs is essential
  • Good organisational and interpersonal skills
  • Self-starter, enthusiastic and able to work on own initiative
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines, and with accuracy under pressure
  • Flexible approach to working
  • Shorthand desirable


Main duties

  • To write, edit and layout the news sections of the magazines
  • To manage and co-ordinate the MADE and Clay Technology news sections with support from the News Editor
  • To collate and assist with press release flow, and checking of newswires/cuttings
  • To represent the magazine at press events, exhibitions and conferences, as well as attending in a news gathering capacity, carrying out interviews when appropriate
  • To liaise with contributors, chase copy and proactively search for news stories
  • To assist in general production tasks, and cover for team members when necessary
  • To develop contacts within and outside the Institute to raise the profile of the magazines
  • To assist with any other projects undertaken by the editorial team
  • To carry out additional research, liaison with internal staff and direct contact with contributors
  • To check and provide feedback on the work of the Junior Reporters
  • To assist with proofreading the publications
  • To deputise for the News Editor when required, as well as contributing ideas for news stories to the News Editor
