Job Specification

 

Summary: The Media Officer is a key member of the Science Media Centre of Canada team. She/he will initiate and run core activities and will undertake daily liaison with the media and scientists. For more on services please see http://www.sciencemedia.ca

 

Reports To: Executive Director

 

Special conditions: Intra and interprovince travel involving overnight absences may be required. Out-of-office hours work will be required from time to time in order to provide an efficient and responsive media liaison service to the media.

 

Primary Tasks:

 

??? Undertake a role in daily media liaison, including preparing and contributing to the centre???s core activities, summary media releases and media briefings.

??? Coordinating appropriate media spokespeople when required for briefings and interviews.

??? Undertake proactive media planning

??? Prepare publications and communications

??? On call out-of-hours on a rotational basis when science is in the headlines

 

??? Work with other staff to:

 

o   generate and implement new activities (such as media briefings);

 

o   recruit new contacts for the database of scientists, journalists and media officers;

 

o   answer media inquiries;

monitor media coverage of science issues and identify emerging issues;

 

o   liaise daily (reactively and proactively) with news and specialist journalists;

 

o   advise and support scientists doing media work;

 

o   develop and maintain the SMCC website;

 

o   actively participate in team meetings.

 

Secondary Tasks:

Assist in the compilation of progress reports for Board and Research Advisory Panel;

            Represent the SMCC at engagements, official visits to institutions etc;

            Assist the ED with the annual strategic planning process and regular progress reviews;

            Initiate and run core activities;

            Some travel might be required

 

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

??       A science and or journalism degree

??       Broad knowledge, understanding and interest in some of the big science issues in the news

??       A proven interest in the way science stories are covered by the media.

??       Excellent communications and IT skills

??       Ability to work under pressure in an extremely busy environment and with tight deadlines

??       Initiative and proven ability to take responsibility for a given task

??       A willingness to travel (within Canada)

 

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in science communication
  • Experience in public speaking
  • Facility in both English and French, written and oral

 

Personal attributes

  • Ability to maintain a cool head under pressure
  • Enthusiastic and outgoing
  • Able to work well with a small team of people
