STEM Communicator (Full time – Cardiff)

??15,500 ??? ??17,000 (depending on qualifications and experience)

science made simple is an award-winning social enterprise based at Cardiff University that was established in 2002. We specialise in the development and delivery of innovative science and engineering shows for schools and events across the UK. Last year we delivered over 500 shows to a total audience of around 75,000 people and in the last 5 years alone we have worked in over 20 different countries. We also frequently work on engagement projects in partnership with university research scientists.

We are now looking to appoint a new member of our team to start as soon as possible after January 2012. The new person will be based at our head office in Cardiff but will work across the UK and beyond

We take pride in appointing only the most talented and passionate presenters who have a love of science and engineering and the skills to communicate that enthusiasm to a variety of audiences. We also strongly believe in investing in the training of our presenters so we would expect you to be open to new training opportunities to build your presenting skills within this position. We strongly value the input all our team have in the development of the business as we continue to grow and provide regular opportunities for staff to have a say in how we can improve what we do. Following a 3-month probationary period we can offer access to a contributory pension scheme and in successful years our staff benefit from performance related bonuses.

This position will require you to learn and present a range of our existing shows (for primary school, secondary school and family audiences) and deliver them at various venues across the UK. This will include a fair amount of traveling and around 6-8 weeks a year (in total ??? not all at once!) staying away from home. A clean driving licence and confidence with driving is essential. Whilst on tour your accommodation and subsistence expenses are covered (within our terms and conditions). When you are not touring and presenting you will be helping to develop and grow the business by supervising customer bookings and building successful relationships with our clients. You will also be actively involved in the creative process of developing new shows and other science communication projects as and when they arise.

Due to the nature of the job an enhanced CRB check will be required. It is also highly likely that the successful candidate will get involved in our international work in which case a full passport would be required

What to do next:

  • Deadline for applications is MONDAY 5TH DECEMBER at 5pm. Interviews for short-listed candidates will be on FRIDAY 16TH DECEMBER in Cardiff.
