If you’re a new reader (welcome!) and wondering “what kind of maniac posts a job that’s closed to a jobs list?” then it’s because I’m trying to collect a good range of job descriptions so that people can have a bit of a rummage and find out about different types of jobs. I also hope that they’re finding job descriptions for jobs they might think about in the future (when they have the necessary experience and skill) and using that to make sure they’re getting the relevant exp and skill…

This is a fantastic opportunity for a Deputy Editor to be responsible for creative content development on the new BBC Science and Technology features website, Future. BBC.com, a showcase of BBC content, currently reaches 62 million unique users every month and is the most visited UK news website in the world. Based in the Media Centre, West London, you’ll commission, write and take responsibility for certain columns, series and strands on the website.

BBC Worldwide Limited is a fully integrated media company whose shares are wholly owned by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The company was awarded with the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in April 2009. This prestigious award for International Trade recognised the company’s substantial growth in overseas earnings and its commercial success at outstanding levels, based on 3 years’ trading results, which benefit the UK creative industries and ultimately the licence fee payer.

BBC.com, part of Digital Media, aims to use the web to reach existing and potential fans of BBC content across the globe. It achieves this through a combination of BBC-branded sites and partnerships with major players in the internet, mobile and video-on-demand (VOD) sectors.


Reporting to the Editor, you’ll be responsible for commissioning and writing long-form features and columns on a range of science, technology and health subjects to agreed schedules and to BBC editorial standards. In addition, you’ll play play an active role in the site???s social media strategy to drive traffic and increase engagement. Working with the editorial team to develop content plans, you’ll be monitoring all competitive titles and international press and creating working relationships with new contributors both in the journalistic and science, technology and health worlds.

Your accountabilities will include: 
– To commission all work within the agreed editorial budgets of the site and to ensure that the website meets its financial targets in all areas of specific responsibility
– To source pictures required for features, both from in-house and external picture libraries 
– To commission video series that either stand alone or enhance long-form feature content 
– To develop original content ideas and work with contributors and TV programmes or producers 


You’ll be a seasoned Deputy Editor with substantial experience in writing and commissioning technology, science, health and environment content. Working as part of a news organization, you’ll have an extensive digital experience, including knowledge of a CMS, HTML. We’re looking for someone with excellent management skills combined with the ability to keep commissions on vision, on budget and on deadline. 

In addition, you’ll demonstrate the following: 
– Excellent communication skills 
– Photoshop familiarity and use of social media 
– Must be entrepreneurial, a problem-solver, detailed reader and creative thinker
