  • As Director of the Science Policy Centre the post holder will give direction to the Society???s policy work, and in doing so will work closely with domestic and overseas partners to deliver a range of programmes.??

    Influencing policy is a key priority in the Society???s new strategic plan. One of the first priorities for the incoming Director will be to implement the policy elements of this strategy, and to help the Society realise its policy ambitions in the coming years. The Director of the Science Policy Centre plays an important leadership role within the Society, attends Board and Council meetings and is a key member of the Executive Director???s senior team. S/he will be expected to contribute to the development of Society-wide policy and strategy.

    This role demands a compelling mix of skills and attributes. The ability to command credibility with Ministers, senior officials and advisers, as well as leaders in the private sector, will be essential. The successful candidate will work effectively within Westminster and Whitehall, across the private sector and internationally; have established and effective networks; and be alert and responsive to key issues within academia and the wider science and innovation community.

    The successful candidate must bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role and be flexible in dealing with changing priorities and a varied portfolio. S/he will report to the Executive Director and be expected to advise and have frequent contact with the Royal Society???s President, Officers and senior Fellows. The Director must be adept at working ???behind the scenes???, harnessing the expertise of the fellowship, as well as being a visible representative of the Society and its work.

    Candidates, will be educated to degree level minimally; preferably in a scientific discipline, and will have proven ability to manage a team of highly qualified and self motivated staff together with an ability to work productively with a range of individuals and partners at very senior levels in the UK and overseas. Excellent communication, project management and general management skills are essential. Experience of living overseas and/or working in an international environment would be an advantage.
