The Nuffield Council on Bioethics

The Council is seeking a graduate for a short term intern position to help with the preparation of background material on possible topics that the Council may consider in the future. The position would suit an individual with an interest in ethical, legal and social issues raised by developments in biological sciences and medicine.

The internship is offered for a period of six to eight weeks between July and September 2012 .

Tasks include

  • Carrying out desk-based research on the ethical implications of recent scientific developments of each of the identified topics, together with an overview of existing or ongoing work on each issue and the topic's potential policy significance

  • Helping refine a template for 'long list' entries, so that information on each topic is set out in a standardised way

  • Liaising with colleagues in the secretariat, and assisting with other projects as necessary

Skills and qualifications required

  • Relevant degree: for example medicine or biological sciences including an ethics component; history or philosophy of science; moral philosophy; law; or other relevant degree with a demonstrable interest in applied ethics. A postgraduate degree or experience in a relevant subject would be an advantage.

  • Basic to advanced understanding of issues in bioethics

  • Research skills

  • Experience of collating and summarising information and drafting documents

  • IT literacy


  • Place of work: Secretariat of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics,???? 28 Bedford Square, London WC1 3JS (some flexibility may be required during the Olympic period)

  • Working hours: 35 hrs/week

  • ??300 per week
