JOB PURPOSE
The Chief Press Manager leads the effective delivery and strategic development of the ESRC's media relations to promote ESRC research, policy and activity to external audiences and to encourage engagement. The post also plays a key role in supporting the ESRC Communications Team delivery all of its strategic and corporate communications objectives
The Chief Press Manager works across the ESRC, the research councils, ESRC major investments to ensure the ESRC media strategy is effective and reflects best practice and latest approaches to media relations and news delivery. They?? will also work with colleagues with BIS, other Government departments, devolved administrations and Higher Education organisations

RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Communications
?????Creative and strategic input into policy development, and management of ESRC communications.
?????Contribute to identifying topics and issues of strategic importance to the ESRC through horizon-scanning and interaction with various directorates within the ESRC.
?????Co-develop and implement communications campaigns that deploy a ra
nge of marketing communication tools such as web-based technologies, events and publications, to raise?? awareness of the ESRC and its research among its key stakeholder groups

ESRC Media??
?????Develop, lead and implement ESRC???s media campaigns, with pro-active placement of stories and features to support corporate news and ESRC research promotion
?????Develop good links with press, TV and radio journalists to place ESRC in a strong position to promote its work to key audiences through local, trade, national and international media.??
?????Work with the Chief Executive, senior managers and other staff on press- and media-related stories, to advise them as appropriate and to ensure key messages are reflected in all external communications??
?????Prepare and brief the Chief Executive and other senior staff for media/external appearances??????????
?????Build relationships with ESRC award-holders, to develop stories of interest and relevance to the press and media
?????Develop relationships with press officers in BIS and other key external agencies
?????Build relationships with press offices in HEIs (Higher Education Institutions) to ensure the ESRC is well-represented in all communications regarding ESRC-funded projects
?????Monitor external developments and new agendas to identify opportunities for media activities and ESRC interventions in broader debates
?????Deal sensitively with difficult and/ or adverse coverage which may bear upon ESRC and advise other colleagues dealing with such matters.
?????Provide reactive and flexible cover for media enquiries and responses to crisis scenarios, including out of hours when appropriate and required.??
?????Oversee?? the?? ESRC???s media training programme and ensure it meets the needs of our research community
?????In partnerships with the digital communications staff, ensure maximum effective use of online and social media to repro ESRC news.??
?????Management???? and development?? of?? the work of the press office team ??? two team members

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential:
?????Significant experience of working in media relations and communications, with a proven track record in creating and successfully implementing media strategies,??
?????Ability to organise and prioritise your own workload, to plan work both in the short and long term and to oversee the effective meeting of deadlines.??
?????Ability to respond to media demands flexibly and if necessary outside office hours
????? Excellent oral and written communication and organisational skills
?????Experience of deploying a range of marketing communications tools to fulfil communication objectives??
?????Demonstrable experience of working with sensitive and complex issues and of presenting them effectively using a range of media approaches
?????Demonstrable experience of ability to influence senior management and opinion formers.??
?????Demonstrable experience of working with and building links with journalists, press and TV at a local and national level
?????Management experience with line management responsibilities
?????Competent grasp of budgets and financial control??
?????Drive, determination and the ability to work flexibly
?????Educated to first degree level or ability to demonstrate an equivalent level of knowledge and skill
?????Experience of using digital media for PR purposes
