Due to our sustained and successful portfolio development, RSC Publishing is looking for an engaging and inspirational Publisher to lead the strategic development of a portfolio of our high impact international journals.

Your primary responsibility will be to lead a team of highly skilled and experienced editorial staff, to further grow our market share, quality, reputation, usage and financial performance. The titles cover three discreet subject areas and represent approximately one third of the RSC journal and database portfolio. Working collaboratively, you will develop and implement progressive strategies for individual titles and portfolio clusters, to build upon the incredible successes of recent years. You will also have publishing and organisation-wide responsibilities for the RSC's Journal Development team.

Reporting to the Head of Journal Publishing, you will sit on the Management Team for RSC Publishing. You will be directly responsible for a group of 6-7 editorial staff, and responsible for approximately 30-40 external editors. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Development and implementation of publishing strategy and related financial planning
  • Effective portfolio management
  • Strategic business development
  • Developing and maintaining a strong scientific network; representing the RSC at Governance meetings, and at Editorial Board meetings and conferences internationally
  • Effective people management and staff development

Skills and qualifications needed

  • Significant STM publishing experience, with managerial experience of teams handling commissioning activities and portfolio development
  • Sound budget management experience
  • Broad awareness of trends in the chemical sciences and STM Publishing
  • High level of commercial acumen with strong negotiation, communication and influencing skills
  • Educated to degree level, and potentially PhD level, preferably in a subject related to chemical science

Based in Cambridge, UK. Salary ??51,747 – ??57,497. Closing date 10??December 2012. Vacancy reference no. 12-137
