Submitting a science communication job to the ScicommJobs blog #scicomm jobs

WordPress doesn’t auto-publish pages so I’m creating a post to highlight this information (normally it lives in the ‘Submitting a job’ in the pages section above). Yes, this is easier than logging out of Twitter and logging in as @ScicommJobs to post the relevant link…

I’ve also implemented a new category for when a job closes.

It used to be possible for people to post jobs directly to the old Posterous blog via an email address. The blog would automatically publish anything that I sent (as it knew it was ‘me’) but items coming from anyone else were held in a moderation queue.

However won’t let me moderate posts that are emailed in so I’m afraid that’s not an option.

You can email suggestions to jo DOT brodie AT gmail DOT com. Things that increase the chances of a job getting posted include formatting it as suggested below and the one essential is that you attach (or paste into the body text) the full job description and any person specification.

It’s possibly worth noting that this blog is not for advertising vacancies, that’s just a byproduct of collecting job descriptions as they become available.

Please note that there are no guarantees that I will post your job for you within any particular time-frame – this is just me managing your expectations :)

ScicommJobs has a house style ;)

Jobs postings look a bit like the example below, the bit at the top is the title which also doubles as the tweet that gets sent out by @ScicommJobs when I publish the post.

The default setting for this blog is London, so if the post is in London you don’t need to mention this in the title / tweet, the example below is for Cambridge. You can post jobs that are available anywhere in the world though (there are jobs listed in Canada and Belgium, among others). If you’re miffed that it’s Londoncentric please start your own local science communication jobs blog and let’s join forces!

Please put the page on which the job advert can be found at the Institute of Clever – not the homepage as that is fairly useless! If your system makes it hard for you to link to the job directly please include what they should search for (and have a word with your system people).

Copy and paste the advert here:
An awesome position has just opened up following a promotion of our current Chief Scicommist to Head of All That is Scicomm. You will be a dynamic, go-getting scicomm type with an ability to explain sciencey stuff to people.

The rest of the advert will probably have info on location, salary details, pensions and whatnot, just copy everything that appears on the page. If you’re struggling with the formatting then whiz the text into Notepad.exe which will get rid of all the previous formatting, after which it will then do your bidding.

Attach the job description, or if there isn’t a separate file (sometimes the text is just on the web page) copy and paste that here too.

How to post your own job – it’s free
1. First check and see if it’s already posted
Adding tells Google to search within this site for your search terms. <– then add your terms in the search box.

2. Send me your job info: jo DOT brodie AT gmail DOT com, or alert me via @JoBrodie
Please don’t use @ScicommJobs to suggest jobs – it’s a ‘dumb’ feed sent directly from this blog and I very rarely see any messages sent to it.

Checklist (you don’t have to list this as a) b) etc in your email)
a) The name of the organisation, both acronym and spelled out if necessary
b) The job title (also useful to know if it’s part time or maternity cover)
c) The web address / url for the job, ideally on the organisation’s page. I almost never link to the job advert which is advertised on a news site or jobs website for example as in order to get hold of the job description you usually need to go to the organisation’s site. That’s the URL I want.
d) A job description (JD) / person specification (PS) – ideally sent as an attachment (I don’t need the application form, but it’s useful to know if people will be asked to apply online). Please don’t just add a link to where the file can be downloaded, I need the file, either attachment or paste the text in if no file available. The link will go out of date within a month and be useless. Without a job description I’m unlikely to post the job until I get hold of it, as I’m not interested in ads but in trapping job descriptions.
e) The full text of the advert, ideally as it appears on the organisation’s own page
f) The salary and closing date (this might appear in (e) of course), if CVs or application forms are needed (this should be in the ad anyway). If there’s an ‘apply online’ button on the page I sometimes remember to flag this up.
g) Contact details of where people should send their CVs (again, should be in the ad)
h) The default location is London for this particular blog. If it’s elsewhere, please mention this somewhere prominently, thanks.
i) Subject line of your email should be written as in the example above please – this will be used as the tweet that’s automatically sent to @ScicommJobs once I publish the post.
