Assistant Press Officer

Main responsibilities:

• To respond to media enquiries, providing information and images or referring calls to press office colleagues and museum experts as appropriate, with an awareness of media deadlines and knowledge of the Museum’s best interests
• To organise and supervise filming, radio recording, photography and interviews with Museum staff in Museum grounds and galleries, (working outside standard Museum hours on occasion), and liaising internally on filming schedules
• To brief media spokespeople from the Museum sites before being interviewed
• To liaise with journalists on the phone, email or in person, organising and giving tours, recces and familiarisation visits of the Museum sites, and cultivating contacts
• To be the first point of contact for the NMM Learning department. Ensure all events releases are drafted, approved and issued to deadline
• To implement media projects from start to finish
• To research, prepare and distribute media communications and contacting media proactively via telephone and email
• To participate in social media activity on our core channels
• To organise and supervise PR activity on-site (e.g. photocalls) professionally, making sure that relevant parties are involved
• To support media events and previews including organising the production of press materials – e.g. press packs and image sheets
• To support other members of the Press Office to ensure that all aspects of the media plans and campaigns are completed to deadline, attend meetings reporting back to the Press Office and identifying possible stories
• To publicise internally the work of the Press Office
• To update and refine the media database
Qualifications and Experience:


• Press Office/PR experience
• An understanding of press office principle and sound judgement
• A general knowledge of UK media
• Experience of handling projects from inception through to implementation
• An effective writing style, with a proven ability to write press releases and related material
• Ability to manage a variety of projects simultaneously, prioritise effectively and meet deadlines
• IT and social media literate
• Strong interpersonal skills and the proven ability to work as part of a team
• Ability to communicate across all levels of the Museum and with external contacts
• A positive approach whilst being sensitive to the Museum environment and the priorities of colleagues

• Experience gained within a museum/heritage environment
• Good working knowledge of databases
• Experience in working with digital images

Terms and Conditions:

The post holder will work a 41 hour week, core hours Monday to Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm with an additional hour to be worked in agreement with line management. Out of hours work will be required from time to time.

Salary: £18,000 – £22,000 per annum
