Head of Engaging Science
The Wellcome Trust aims to achieve extraordinary improvements in health; our Engaging Science programme enables the public to explore and become involved with medical science, its future directions, its impacts on society and the ethical questions it brings. As Head of Engaging Science, you will be a champion for public engagement. You will develop and deliver the strategy by supporting projects via grants, commissioning work and seeking innovation. Your challenge will be to make sure we work with researchers and the creative industries to support the best projects, to understand their impact and to set future directions. About the role
We strive to ensure that science is part of the national conversation. We support informed debate about key issues in science and society, and aim to spread the delight and interest that many derive from science and its spirit of curiosity. That’s why our Engaging Science grants programme offers over £8 million each year to projects across the sciences, the arts, and the broadcast and gaming industries. Your challenge will be to make sure we support high quality and innovative projects that can make a difference. But you’ll do much more than simply allocate funding. You will influence key audience-based industries to work with scientific ideas, identify strategic topics for public engagement activity and convince senior scientists of the importance of this work. You will lead your team in the development and delivery of extraordinary projects. Ultimately, you’ll take science to mainstream and new audiences – through everything from film to theatre to exhibitions to policy-influencing events.
For a role with such extraordinary potential, you will have significant experience in a public engagement role and credibility at a senior level within a scientific setting. You will have significant management experience and at least a degree in a bio-science field. Your scientific knowledge and your ability to manage and deliver innovative and creative projects will be key to the role. You’ll also need excellent communication and organisational skills – as networking will be an important part of your day-to-day work, as will representing the Wellcome Trust externally.
Our vision is to achieve extraordinary improvements in human and animal health. We are a global charitable foundation dedicated to achieving extraordinary improvements in human and animal health. We support the brightest minds in biomedical research and the medical humanities. Our breadth of support includes public engagement, education and the application of research to improve health.
Salary circa £75,000 + excellent benefits.
