It’s more the place that is scicomm-y than the job, it’s a mixed job with a heavy element of social media use, writing about science in a scientific organisation. From what I gather a degree isn’t essential.

This position will , support delivery of a range of External Communications materials, for example sourcing and checking images for use in publications, managing the flickr library and stock photo collection.

Oversee and manage STFC’s digital and social media presence, and under the direction of the External Communications Manager, would be responsible for the initiation, management, and implementation of electronic, web, and social media content, and the strategic development and implementation of new content delivery systems.

Developing social media pages on sites such as Facebook, Twitter etc., Creating daily posts and monitoring comments on the various sites.

Detailed Responsibilities:

To provide general communications assistance to external communications, including support to the external communications manager, media manager, stakeholder engagement, internet and web, internal communications and communications planning.

To establish and develop online relationships and engage with social voices / communities for campaigns and themes related to STFC. Enhance the reputation of STFC to the wider audiences

To actively monitor and engage with all forms of Social Media (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, etc.) to support STFC wide activity/UK science community activity.

To collate/source information from across the UK science community in order to generate news-worthy stories and then draft/write online copy for articles, blogs and social media.

To act as one of the key points of contact for social media queries, developing a response process, engaging with potential and existing stakeholders and looking to proactively influence these groups and resolving any arising issues

To ensure data capture for STFC from various sources (web, events – schools/open evenings, etc.), track campaign effectiveness and providing feedback to support the social media activity.

Person Specification:

·        A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades A-C, including English and Maths

·        Knowledge of Social Media and the a full understanding of appropriate use for businesses

·        Active listening

·        Excellent written and verbal communication skills

·        Presentation skills

·        A confident use of Word and Excel plus experience of Twitter, Facebook and other social media tools.

·        Good eye for detail when using IT

·        Good standard of grammar (written and verbal)

·        Attention to detail

·        Ability to work to tight deadlines

·        Knowledge of STFC science desirable

·        Enthusiasm for science essential
